Obiettivi formativi

Il seminario intende presentare uno dei più importanti temi della cultura americana in forma interdisciplinare nel suo evolversi dal diciassettesimo secolo ai giorni nostri sottolineando come esso sia stato determinante dal punto di vista storico, sociale e letterario. Saranno pertanto oggetto di esame gli eventi storici, rilevanti documenti sociopolitici, i cambiamenti socioculturali, testi narrativi, opere drammatiche, poesie, immagini fotografiche e pittoriche, canzoni popolari.

This seminar will examine one of the guiding themes in American culture from the Seventeenth Century to the present from an interdisciplinary perspective that highlights its historical, social and literary significance. Accordingly, we will focus our attention on historical events, relevant sociopolitical documents and sociocultural changes; fiction, plays and poems; photographs, paintings and popular songs.

Alla fine del seminario gli studenti:

-- avranno acquisito una solida conoscenza storica, culturale e letteraria del sogno americano come realtà e come mito;

--avranno assimilato i vari significati che esso ha assunto per le diverse generazioni degli americani;

-- si saranno resi conto di come i miti culturali orientino il modo di pensare di ciascun individuo;

-- avranno compreso l'importanza del concetto di interdisciplinarità attraverso lo studio dei vari testi proposti;

-- avranno compreso il ruolo che la storia, il mito e la memoria hanno assunto nella formazione dell'identità americana.

At the completion of this seminar, students will:

-- have deepened their social, cultural and literary understanding of the American Dream as reality and as myth;

-- be able to discuss the various meanings it has assumed for succeeding generations of Americans;

-- better realize how cultural myths influence the way people think about themselves;

-- have greater expertise in adopting an interdisciplinary approach;

-- better understand the role that history, myth and memory have played in the formation of American identities.

Modalità di insegnamento

Il seminario, della durata di 36 ore complessive (6 CFU), sarà svolto in inglese e richiede la partecipazione attiva degli studenti con frequenti ponderati interventi personali conseguenti ad un accurato studio dei testi e delle varie interpretazioni critiche forniti dalla docente in formato cartaceo e dagli ascolti delle registrazioni sonore dei testi che saranno rese disponibili all'inizio del seminario su un servizio “Cloud”. La frequenza è tassativamente obbligatoria.

 

 

This is a Master's level seminar (36 hours - 6 credits) conducted in English. Students are expected to participate actively in class discussions with ideas based on their careful reading in advance of the primary texts and of the comments and contextual material in the coursepack. Audio versions of some of the seminar readings will be available on a cloud service. Attendance is obligatory.

Modalità di verifica dell'apprendimento

La verifica sarà svolta in forma scritta e orale in inglese o in italiano precisando che la lingua scelta dallo studente non influirà sulla valutazione finale. Il voto finale, espresso in trentesimi, sarà costituito dalla media dei voti riportati:

1) per la partecipazione attiva allo svolgimento delle lezioni;

2) dalla redazione di una tesina, con applicazione delle conoscenze e della metodologia acquisite, su un argomento di libera scelta approvato dalla docente;

3) dal colloquio orale che prevede una breve discussione della tesina e due domande sui testi esaminati durante lo svolgimento delle lezioni.

Your final grade will be derived from the average of the grades you receive for:

1) your active participation during the seminar sessions;

2) your term paper on a topic you choose with my approval;

3) your oral exam which will consist of a brief discussion of your term paper and two questions on texts examined in class.
