The teaching contributes to the educational objectives of the degree course by providing historical, theoretical and methodological knowledge for the study of modern European theatre, with particular focus on French theatre in the 19th and early 20th century. Within this context, with an interdisciplinary approach, the links between literature and the performing arts in the developments of French theatre, from Romanticism to Naturalism up to the avant-gardes of the first decades of the twentieth century, will be particularly highlighted.

At the end of the course, students should have acquired knowledge and understanding of the problems of theatre historiography with reference to the historical period and cultural context. They should have acquired awareness and critical autonomy in the specific field of theatre history, with particular attention to the reconstruction of the historical-artistic phenomena that, with a comparative perspective, contribute to the development of the performing arts. This knowledge must be elaborated and applied to the study of theatrical phenomena, through the acquisition of the specialised terminology of the discipline, the retrieval and use of bibliographic sources and an interdisciplinary approach.

The course will consist of 36 hours of frontal teaching. During the lecture hours, reading of texts and classroom discussions will be proposed. At the end of each week, the slides of the lectures will be uploaded onto the University eLearning platform. Attendance of the lectures is recommended; non-attending students who wish to request further clarification on the course may contact the lecturer by email.

For attending and non-attending students, the examination will be a mandatory colloquium with the aim to discuss and ascertain the knowledge and skills acquired.

Students with Specific Learning Difficulties are encouraged to contact the lecturer at the beginning of the course to arrange individual learning paths suited to their needs, and that could go beyond the compensatory and dispensatory measures guaranteed for the exam.

Teaching will focus on the following topics:

• rise and decline of romantic drama;
• theatres and spectacles in the Second Empire, from vaudeville to bourgeois drama;
• Paris as the European capital of spectacle, from the 1880s to the 1920s;
• Naturalism and Symbolism;
• Mise en scène and modern drama;
• New avant-gardes and 'rapple à l'ordre'.
