Obiettivi formativi

The teaching is part of the general objective of the course of study to provide an articulate and systematic knowledge of the modern world in its multiple cultural expressions and to develop the observation and critical evaluation of the different expressive and artistic phenomena, especially in a comparative form. The aim of the teaching is to stimulate students to identify and critically problematize paradigms of representation and narrative modes of Latin American literature generated by the broad and changing concept of the 'monstrous' and related notions. At the end of the teaching, students will be able to discuss theoretical and historical features inherent to a specific aspect of Latin American literature. Moreover, since the reflection on the monstrous will be deepened through the use of iconographic material, students will also be able to establish connections between different cultural phenomena, languages and arts, developing a skill traditionally linked to the field of comparative studies

Programma

Mythological monsters, cannibal giants and imaginary animals are the creatures that the first explorers and chroniclers used to describe and understand the irreducible otherness of the American continent and its inhabitants. The multiple narratives of the monstrous in Latin American literature from the Conquest to the present day can be traced back to a similarly teratological imagination, which entrusts the representation - or self-representations - of the American continent to a vast catalogue of human, animal and moral monsters. The course aims to analyse the different fluctuations in the use of the monster as a trope emblematic of American eccentricity through the reading and analysis of texts representing the founding moments of Latin American history, the conquest and independence, the main features of which will be outlined, up to the contemporary re-signification of monstrosity through parodic re-writings and its claim from the gender.

The programme will therefore be divided into 6 units, as follows:

1) Introduction to Latin American literature: themes, problems, key concepts
2) From mythological monster to biopolitical monster: theories of the monstrous
3) The 'Discovery' and the imaginary America: C. Colón, Diario de a bordo, Carta a Luis de Santángel (1493)
4) Civilisation and barbarism: E. Echeverría, El Matadero (1838), J.L. Borges, "La fiesta del monstruo" (1947)
5) Parodic monsters: J.L. Borges, "La casa de Asterión" (1947)
6) Vindication of the monster and feminist perspective (Silvna Ocampo, Luisa Valenzuela, Mónica Ojeda)

36 hours, 60 % lectures, 40 % class discussion and seminarial activities. However, the lectures will be seminar-based: students are therefore required to read the texts assigned to them via the Moodle platform before the lecture itself and to actively participate in the discussion. There will also be exercises on the Moodle platform to check learning, develop autonomy of judgement and consolidate communication skills, as well as meetings with foreign writers and scholars.

Learning will be verified during the teaching, especially through active participation in the discussion, aimed at stimulating both the application of the theoretical and methodological notions acquired during the course and a personal and autonomous critical vision. Finally through an oral examination (in Italian and in Spanish) with a grade expressed in thirtieths, structured in two parts: in the first part, we'll verify the knowledge of historical-literary notions and the ability to argue in a personal way by relating the primary texts and the critical bibliography; in the second part, students will be asked to carry out the reading, translation and analysis of one or more examination texts, using the theories and critical tools provided in class. Thus, the ability to expose general arguments with clarity and propriety, to interpret and comment on individual texts, and to connect individual texts in an overall critical view will be assessed. The duration of the exam (approximately half an hour) may vary depending on the comprehensiveness of the answers given.
